Mechanism of Action: Vonoprazan works by blocking the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme system (the "proton pump") in the stomach lining. Unlike traditional proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) which bind irreversibly, vonoprazan binds reversibly and competitively with potassium ions, more effectively inhibiting acid secretion.
Rapid and Potent Effect: It offers a faster onset of action and more potent, long-lasting acid suppression compared to conventional PPIs like omeprazole or lansoprazole. Its efficacy is not affected by food intake, providing dosing flexibility.
Primary Uses:
- Healing and maintenance of erosive esophagitis (acid damage to the esophagus).
- Relief of heartburn symptoms associated with GERD.
- Healing of gastric and duodenal ulcers.
