- Pregnancy & Children: Tetracycline is generally not recommended for use during the last half of pregnancy or in children under 8 years of age because it can cause permanent tooth discoloration (yellow-gray-brown) and affect bone development.
- Sun Sensitivity: This medication can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight (photosensitivity). Avoid prolonged sun exposure and use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors.
- Potential Side Effects: Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and upset stomach.
- Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medications and supplements you are taking, especially oral contraceptives (birth control pills might be less effective) or blood thinners (like warfarin).
- Uses: Treats infections such as pneumonia, chlamydia, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, cholera, and severe acne. It is not effective against viral infections like the common cold or flu.
- Dosage: Typically prescribed as 250 mg or 500 mg capsules to be taken two or four times daily.
