A special spot on the enzyme where the matching substrate fits precisely.
Factors Affecting Activity
- Temperature: Higher warmth speeds up activity up to a point, but extreme heat ruins or denatures the enzyme's shape.
- pH Level: Every enzyme has a best (optimum) acidity or alkalinity level; moving outside this range reduces or stops activity.
- Substrate Concentration: Adding more substrate increases the reaction rate until all enzyme active sites become fully busy or saturated.
- Inhibitors: Molecules that slow down or block enzyme function.
